County facilities upgrade enters final phase
Two of three facility improvement projects complete
In fall 2016 the Benton County Board of Commissioners approved a proposal to begin the remodel process on three county facilities: Public Service Building on 27th Street; Avery Building on Avery Avenue; and, the Sunset Building on Research Way.
The improvement project began with renovating 5,000 square feet of vacant space at the Sunset Building in January 2017. Facilities staff added and removed walls, replaced carpet, adjusted lighting and added new cubicles provided at no cost from Hewlett-Packard.
The renovated space was temporarily used by the Community Development Department from May 2017 through April 2018 while the Avery Building underwent a drastic renovation during the second phase of the facilities upgrade project. The renovated and expanded structure contains a large public meeting room on the second floor, an elevator, improved public service areas, a new self-help center for the public, interior and exterior painting, new carpet, and bathroom updates.
The final phase of the facilities upgrade is renovating the Public Services Building to be used solely for the Benton Health Center and mental health services. Renovation of the Public Services Building will expand the Benton Health Center to the complete building footprint, move the lobby area to a central location and improve environmental conditions within the building.
The focal point of the renovation will be the new main entrance and centralized reception area where patients can access all services from the entrance. A separate waiting room for mental health services and space for dental services has been allocated. The exterior will undergo renovation allowing for much-needed modernization.
To accommodate the Public Services Building’s remodel, all dental services and selected mental health services provided at the Benton Health Center will temporarily relocate to the 53rd ST Health Services Center at the Benton County Fairgrounds beginning March 20, 2018.
The 53rd ST Health Services Center is located at the Benton County Fairgrounds, on the corner of SW 53rd ST and SW Reservoir Avenue, in a single modular building. Parking is available for patients and staff, and there is accessible parking available too.
The mental health services that will temporarily relocate to the 53rd ST Health Services Center include the Assertive Community Treatment Team, Jail Diversion Team, Wraparound Care Coordinators, Housing Team, Psychiatry providers and nurses.
The mental health services that will remain at the Benton Health Center on 530 NW 27th Street are the Adult Outpatient team, Crisis Team, and Support Teams. The services, plus primary care, WIC, lab, Pharmacy, and immunization services provided at the Benton Health Center will remain open and available.
Patients will be able to enter the Benton Health Center as they do now, but the entrance by the WIC lobby will no longer be available. It is likely that parking at the Benton Health Center will become even more limited while construction is underway.
The remodel projects are funded using internal funds, a federal Health Resources and Services Administration grant, and long-term financing over the next three years. The remodel of the Benton Health Center is expected to be completed in 2019.
